Our Founder & Story

Over 30 years of bringing the healing power of music to Cumbria

Annie Mawson MBE

Annie Mawson MBE founded Sunbeams Music Trust in 1992 after witnessing first-hand the remarkable effect music had on a seriously ill child in hospital. Inspired by this transformative moment, Annie devoted her life to harnessing the healing power of music for those who need it most.

A professional harpist and musician, Annie developed the Music for Life® and Music for Dignity® programmes, creating innovative approaches to community music therapy that have touched thousands of lives across Cumbria.

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to music therapy and the community, Annie was awarded an MBE. The purpose-built Sunbeams Music Centre in Penrith stands as a testament to her vision and dedication.
